NTA UGC NET Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the UGC NET exam are as follows:

Educational Qualification

  • Master’s percentage: 55% (UR/General-EWS); 50% (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/PwBD/Third Gender) in a UGC-recognized Master’s or equivalent in relevant fields (e.g., Humanities, Social Sciences incl. languages, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science).
  • Final-year/provisional: PG final-year/result-awaited can apply provisionally. To retain eligibility after qualifying, complete the Master’s with required marks within 2 years from the NET result for JRF/Assistant Professor, or within 1 year if qualified for “Ph.D. only.”
  • Third Gender relaxations: Same fee, age, and eligibility relaxations as SC/ST/PwD/PwBD. Subject-wise cut-offs for this category will be the lowest among SC/ST/PwD/PwBD/OBC-NCL/General-EWS in that subject.
  • 1991 relaxation: Candidates whose Master’s exam was completed by 19 Sept 1991 get a 5% marks relaxation (55% → 50%).
  • Subject to choose: Appear in your PG subject; if it’s not listed in NET subjects, choose the closest related subject.
  • Four-year bachelor’s route:
    • Graduates of a 4-year/8-semester program need 75% aggregate or equivalent grade (5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/EWS as per UGC Ph.D. Regulations 2022).
    • Qualifying via the 4-year degree makes you eligible for JRF and Ph.D. admission, but not for Assistant Professor appointment.
    • Final-year 4-year UG candidates may apply provisionally; after qualifying, meet the Ph.D. Regulations 2022 timelines: within 2 years (if JRF) or 1 year (if Ph.D.-only) from the NET result.
    • You may choose the subject you want to pursue for Ph.D., irrespective of your UG discipline (from the notified list for this cycle).
  • Documents/verification: No documents or printouts are required at application. Eligibility is self-declared; if found ineligible at any stage, candidature can be cancelled and legal action may follow.
  • Foreign/PG diploma equivalence: Candidates with foreign qualifications should obtain UGC equivalence under the 2025 Equivalence Regulations. For Indian PG diplomas, confirm equivalence to a Master’s with AIU before applying.

Age Limit

  • JRF: Not more than 30 years as of the 1st day of the month in which the examination is concluded, i.e., 01.12.2025.
  • Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit in applying for UGC-NET for Assistant Professor.
  • Admission to Ph.D: There is no upper age limit for applying for UGC-NET for admission to PhD.

Age Relaxation

  • OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/PwBD/Third Gender and all women applicants: up to 5 years’ relaxation.
  • Research experience: relaxation equal to the certified period spent on research in the relevant/related PG subject, capped at 5 years; research done solely to complete UG/PG degrees is not counted.
  • LLM degree holders: additional 3 years’ relaxation.
  • Armed forces personnel: up to 5 years’ relaxation, subject to length of service up to the first day of the exam month (e.g., 01.12.2025 for Dec 2025 session).
  • Important cap: Total age relaxation from all grounds combined must not exceed 5 years under any circumstances.
