What is GATE and Who Should Apply?
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level entrance exam conducted annually by IITs and IISc Bangalore. Qualifying in GATE is essential for:
- M.Tech, ME, and PhD admissions in top engineering/science institutes
- Direct recruitment to PSUs such as IOCL, ONGC, NTPC, BHEL, and others
- Group A-level posts in Central Government departments
GATE 2026 will be held across 30 engineering and science subjects—with options for up to two test papers per candidate.

No age limit for GATE exam. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, and arts are eligible.
GATE 2026 Application Process & Fees
Applying for GATE 2026 is exclusively online via the GATE GOAPS portal. You will need scanned copies of your photo, signature, and certificates.

GATE Exam Pattern & Syllabus (2026)
GATE 2026 will be a Computer-Based Test (CBT). Each paper consists of 65 questions (MCQ, MSQ, and NAT formats):
- General Aptitude: 15 marks (common across all papers)
- Engineering Mathematics: 13 marks (most technical papers)
- Subject-Specific: 72 marks (technical), 85 marks for select streams
